Ch 39 : Illegitimate child

“A man fooling around with his fiancée’s younger sister has no right to call anyone shameless!”

Shen Nanyue shot back coldly, stepping backward to widen the distance between them.

Hearing her words only made Chen Mu angrier.

“So that’s why you dared to make such a huge scene at Aunt Zhou’s birthday banquet and break off your engagement with Meng Yan. Turns out you found yourself the Zhou family’s illegitimate son!”

As he spoke, he pointed in Zhou Yushen’s direction.

“You want to climb into the Zhou family, yet you’re relying on an illegitimate son to get there. Do you have any dignity left?”

Shen Nanyue frowned and followed the direction of his finger.

The Zhou family’s illegitimate son?

Who?

Zhou Yushen?

Zhou Yushen was standing beside a round stone pillar.

Whatever was happening on the other end of the phone call seemed irritating, and he was lightly kicking the stone with the tip of his shoe.

Under the dim lighting, his expression couldn’t be seen clearly, though he definitely didn’t look pleased.

Shen Nanyue sneered inwardly.

Chen Mu truly could spout nonsense without blinking.

Turning back, she looked at him coldly.

“Get lost. Don’t force me to hit you.”

Seeing that Chen Mu still looked unwilling to back down, Shen Nanyue added,

“When I broke my own uncle’s leg, you were standing right there watching. What? Do you think you’re somehow more special than my own uncle?”

Chen Mu instantly fell silent.

He would never forget that day—Shen Nanyue personally smashing her uncle’s bones with a Langya board.

It was also from that incident onward that he began to fear her somewhat.

So when Lin Siwan threw herself at him later, he hadn’t rejected her.

Because deep down, he had already wanted to sever ties with Shen Nanyue.

And the secret Lin Siwan told him afterward only made him dislike Shen Nanyue even more.

“Brother Chen Mu!”

Lin Siwan’s voice drifted over from the distance.

Looking over, she stood by the doorway, her face pale beneath the lights.

Her frail body swayed weakly, looking exactly like a wife who had just discovered her husband cheating.

Shen Nanyue let out a mocking laugh.

“If you don’t hurry over, my dear little sister might faint.”

Only then did Chen Mu glare viciously at Shen Nanyue before leaving behind one last sentence.

“I’d like to see how Zhou Yushen dumps you in the end.”

Then he turned and walked away.

Shen Nanyue rolled her eyes.

Dumped?

She was the one being pursued, alright?

At that moment, Zhou Yushen finished his call and returned.

The two got into the car.

Shen Nanyue handed him a bank card.

“There’s eight million in here. I’ll repay the remaining twelve million within three months.”

Zhou Yushen accepted the card without the slightest hesitation.

The pleased smile on his face made it obvious he was in an excellent mood.

Shen Nanyue laughed helplessly.

Chen Mu actually suspected Zhou Yushen was the Zhou family’s illegitimate son.

Sure, he looked noble and refined on the outside, but inside he was still just a money-loving office worker.

“You spent too much money today. If that Young Master Zhou gives you trouble, tell me. I’ll explain it for you.”

Zhou Yushen slipped the card into the upper layer of his wallet and smiled at her words.

“Worried about me?”

“After all, you bought the painting for me.”

As she spoke, Shen Nanyue started the car.

Zhou Yushen glanced at the painting in the back seat and asked,

“Does this painting mean something special to you?”

Shen Nanyue pursed her lips and remained silent for a few seconds before finally answering.

“The artist who painted it is someone I really admire.”

“Was the artist a man or a woman?”

The thing Zhou Yushen focused on caught Shen Nanyue off guard for a moment.

She spared him a quick glance.

“You’re jealous of a painter?”

“As long as it’s a man, I have to be cautious.”

“Hah. So women can only like men?”

The upward curve of Zhou Yushen’s lips froze.

Frowning, he looked at Shen Nanyue’s profile with an indescribable expression.

Sensing his gaze, Shen Nanyue was secretly delighted inside, though she didn’t show it outwardly.

Until they arrived downstairs at Zhou Yushen’s apartment, neither of them spoke again.

Zhou Yushen sat quietly in the passenger seat the whole way, his expression dark and thoughtful.

Even after arriving, he still hadn’t snapped out of it.

Shen Nanyue tapped the steering wheel, the crisp sound pulling Zhou Yushen from his thoughts.

“We’re here.”

She gestured toward the entrance with her chin.

Zhou Yushen glanced at the doorway, then turned back to Shen Nanyue and abruptly asked something completely unrelated to their previous conversation.

“Are you hungry?”

Shen Nanyue looked at him in confusion without answering.

Instead, the loud growl of her stomach answered for her.

The smile returned to Zhou Yushen’s lips.

Unfastening his seatbelt, he said, “Come on. I’ll make you something to eat.”

Watching Zhou Yushen step out of the passenger seat, Shen Nanyue frowned at his retreating figure.

After thinking for a moment, she got out of the car as well.

He didn’t look like someone who knew how to cook at all.

She was a little curious about what kind of meal he could actually make.

The two entered the building and took the elevator upstairs.

After entering Zhou Yushen’s apartment, Shen Nanyue quietly surveyed the entire place.

It had a typical minimalist black-and-white design.

The living room sat to the left of the entrance.

The moment they stepped inside, she saw a leather sofa positioned in the center of the spacious room, while the floor lamp automatically lit up at their arrival.

Zhou Yushen switched on the lights, fully revealing the enormous living room.

In front of the sofa stood a glossy obsidian-black coffee table, and beyond it hung an oversized television screen.

Connected to the living room was an open kitchen.

The dining table extended vertically from the stove for nearly three meters, and the white porcelain surfaces looked even colder beneath the lights.

“What would you like to eat?” Zhou Yushen asked.

“I’ll follow the host’s arrangements. Whatever you make, I’ll eat.”

Zhou Yushen nodded.

“Then rest for a bit. I’ll be quick.”

He smiled at Shen Nanyue before turning toward the kitchen.

The open kitchen wasn’t small, yet once his tall figure stepped inside, it somehow felt cramped.

Shen Nanyue didn’t stand on ceremony either and walked straight to the sofa.

While watching Zhou Yushen busy himself in the kitchen, she sent a message to Xiao Qi, asking him to investigate the collector’s background.

Xiao Qi replied almost instantly.

“Understood, Sister Yueyue! By the way, do you want me to investigate that Zhou Yushen guy you’ve been getting close to lately?”

Xiao Qi was a young man Shen Nanyue had saved three years ago.

He was highly skilled with computers and often helped her investigate things.

No matter how difficult the task, Xiao Qi could always uncover the truth—and with absolute accuracy.

He was even more capable than a private detective.

Shen Nanyue turned her head toward Zhou Yushen, who was busy cooking.

He was chopping vegetables.

Perhaps sensing her gaze from the corner of his eye, he looked up too.

Their eyes met.

He gave her a soft smile.

Shen Nanyue quickly looked away, making sure she wouldn’t get seduced by him again.

Lowering her head, she stared at her phone while her fingers moved swiftly across the screen.

“No need.”

Light from the enormous floor-to-ceiling windows spilled into the room.

Setting down her phone, Shen Nanyue stood up and walked toward the windows.

Night had already fallen, and lights from the city’s skyscrapers gradually illuminated the skyline, reflecting shimmering waves across the Huai River outside.

This really was an excellent place to enjoy the scenery.

She even began considering whether she should buy an apartment here in the future.

After a while, the aroma of food gradually filled the spacious apartment and drifted into Shen Nanyue’s nose.

Subconsciously, she turned toward the kitchen.

Zhou Yushen was placing the final soup dish onto the dining table.

Smiling, he beckoned her over.

“Come eat.”

Shen Nanyue walked over.

The meal was simple: three dishes and one soup.

Braised pork ribs, stir-fried vegetables, cold mixed shredded vegetables, and seafood meatball soup.

“It smells amazing. I didn’t expect you to actually know how to cook.”

Zhou Yushen was famously known as an untouchable iceberg beauty—everyone said he was far beyond anyone’s reach. But only Shen Nanyue knew the blazing passion and madness hidden beneath his cold and austere exterior.

At first, she thought he only lusted after her beauty, addicted to the desire and intoxication of the night. Yet when he willingly bowed before her, content to become utterly devoted to her, she finally understood—love had always been a kind of willing taming, one powerful enough to pull the cold moon hanging high in the heavens down into the mortal dust.
