Ruan Xingyao leaned affectionately against Seventeenth Senior Brother’s hand and said, “Alright, with Seventeenth Senior Brother helping me, that couldn’t be better.”
Her tone was full of joy.
But the next moment, a hint of sadness crept into her voice.
“But, Seventeenth Senior Brother, can you really stay here forever?” Ruan Xingyao asked softly.
Her soul had crossed over into the body of a girl with the same name in this world — taking over her body to survive here.
However, Seventeenth Senior Brother had come here in the flesh.
She didn’t know how that had happened, nor whether he could survive in this world for long.
Seventeenth Senior Brother said gently, “Don’t worry. I’ll find a way to stay.”
Ruan Xingyao’s chest felt warm and sour, and she sniffled, resting her head on his leg like a small animal.
It felt as if an invisible wall had risen between her and Seventeenth Senior Brother, shutting Ruan Xingzhuo and the others outside.
The sight of it stabbed deeply into their hearts.
No one knew how much time passed before Ruan Xingyao finally lifted her head, having calmed down.
She stood up and turned toward the others, introducing them: “This is my Seventeenth Senior Brother, Yi Wenxue.”
Then she introduced them to Yi Wenxue, “Seventeenth Senior Brother, this is my younger brother, Ruan Xingzhuo; my younger sister, You Huan; and my assistant, Chen Yu.”
The group nodded politely to one another — a formal introduction at last.
However, it was obvious that both sides were brimming with hostility toward each other.
Chen Yu cleared his throat and said, “I know this might not be the best time, but Xingxing, regarding Mr. Yi’s situation — I have to report it to my superiors. Once we return to Ning City, Mr. Yi will likely need to come with me to the bureau.”
Yi Wenxue’s circumstances were even more extraordinary than Ruan Xingyao’s.
Chen Yu had already made a preliminary report, but how his superiors would handle Yi Wenxue remained uncertain.
He didn’t spell everything out, but the look he gave Ruan Xingyao said enough — she needed to be mentally prepared.
Ruan Xingyao understood what he meant, and though a flicker of anger stirred in her heart, she’d endured enough trials to know exactly how these people worked.
She said, “Fine, but I’m going with him.”
She couldn’t possibly let Yi Wenxue face them alone.
Chen Yu immediately sensed the sharp edge in her tone.
It only confirmed for him what he already suspected — when Ruan Xingyao decided to protect someone, she would do so without hesitation, even at her own expense.
After a long silence, he finally said, “Xingxing, I’ll handle the negotiations.”
Ruan Xingyao stared straight at him, saying neither that she believed him nor that she didn’t.
She had only one thought in her mind — all the suffering she had endured, she would never allow her Seventeenth Senior Brother to experience again.
The atmosphere instantly grew heavy.
Yi Wenxue lifted his hand and gently pressed it on the top of Ruan Xingyao’s head.
“Alright, Yaoyao,” he said softly, “let’s deal with the matters at hand first, okay?”
Ruan Xingyao looked up at him, and her eyes immediately softened.
She nodded obediently. “Then let’s go back to the dog factory.”
Yi Wenxue replied, “I’ll follow you wherever you go.”
Ruan Xingyao turned to Ruan Xingzhuo and the others.
“Let’s go, Back to the dog factory.” she said.
At the dog factory.
The group got out of the car.
Jiang Xuan and the others were still gathering evidence.
When he saw that Ruan Xingyao had returned safe and sound, Jiang Xuan quickly came over.
“Expert Ruan, are you… alright now?” he asked.
He was trying very hard not to appear too shocked, but the way his eyes couldn’t help scanning Ruan Xingyao from head to toe betrayed his disbelief.
After all, the way she had coughed up blood and fainted earlier had been terrifying.
Yet only a few hours later, she looked perfectly fine.
It was simply unbelievable!
Ruan Xingyao didn’t bother to explain.
She only said, “I’m going to check on the puppies.”
She had exhausted her spiritual energy removing the micro-cameras from their eyes, but she hadn’t finished healing them all yet.
She wasn’t sure if any of them were still in pain.
Jiang Xuan quickly said, “Don’t worry, Expert Ruan — the veterinarians have already examined them. So far, no aftereffects have been found.”
That reassurance visibly relaxed Ruan Xingyao.
She truly couldn’t bear to let even one little creature suffer.
Yi Wenxue watched her quietly, eyes full of helpless affection.
His little junior sister was a soft-hearted Goddess.
Whether in the Beast-Taming Sect or in this strange world, she was always the guardian deity of small animals.
When Ruan Xingyao looked up and met Yi Wenxue’s helpless gaze, she immediately knew what he was thinking.
She puffed out her cheeks slightly and said, “Seventeenth Senior Brother, come help me.”
Even though Jiang Xuan said the veterinarians had already checked the puppies, she still wanted to make them feel more comfortable.
If she were alone, she might have had to give up — but now that her Seventeenth Senior Brother was here, she wasn’t about to waste the chance!
Yi Wenxue nodded. “Alright. I’ll do whatever you say.”
Jiang Xuan looked on in confusion at the unfamiliar man who had suddenly appeared.
He wanted to ask who he was, but didn’t even know where to start.
Ruan Xingyao didn’t notice his bewilderment — she had already led Yi Wenxue inside.
The puppies were still locked up in their cages.
As soon as Ruan Xingyao walked in, the little creatures immediately grew restless.
They all knew—this human was the kindest one to them!
One by one, the little ones stood up in their cages, gripping the bars as they expressed their gratitude toward her.
[Human! Thank you for saving us!]
[Human! You’re so kind! You’re the best person in the whole world!]
[Human! Can I follow you? I don’t eat much, I promise!]
[Human! I want to follow you too!]
[Human…]
Listening to the voices of the little ones, Yi Wenxue’s gaze toward Ruan Xingyao unconsciously softened even more.
He said, “Go on, tell me—how do you want me to help you?”
Ruan Xingyao turned her head to look at Yi Wenxue, a mischievous glint flashing in her eyes.
She said, “Seventeenth Senior Brother, you know my spiritual power has only recovered a little. Help me—let them all recover their health.”
Yi Wenxue didn’t act immediately.
Instead, he said, “Yao’er, you must understand—this isn’t the Beast-Taming Sect. If I take action, they’ll turn into aberrations.”
Restoring the puppies’ health would infuse their bodies with the spiritual energy of the Beast-Taming Sect.
Although he could control it so they wouldn’t become like the sect’s contracted beasts, they would still end up far more intelligent than the other dogs of this world.
Ruan Xingyao hesitated a little.
She wasn’t sure if doing this would violate this world’s rules.
But then again—her very arrival in this world had already disrupted its balance.
And now, with her Seventeenth Senior Brother here as well, it only meant that more rules would be broken in the future.
So then…
