Ch 48 : Switching Between Light and Dark

Possessing the heightened senses of a Digimon, Sora heard a set of footsteps approaching from afar.

Judging by the rhythm, it was someone dancing as they walked.

As the sound drew closer, she saw a young Black man wearing sunglasses, sporting a perm, carrying a boombox, and dressed in bell-bottom pants.

The man in sunglasses noticed Sora too. Her alluring curves and fiery outfit invigorated him, and he quickly stepped forward, asking enthusiastically, “Hey, lady, wanna go on a date?”

Sora didn’t answer. She merely smiled and asked in return, “What year is it?”

The man was briefly stunned by her enchanting smile. Then, hearing her question, he blinked and said, “You don’t even know that?”

Sora smiled. “I have three rules when it comes to dates. First, I don’t date guys who don’t know what year it is. That means they lack basic common sense.”

Seeing an opportunity, the man straightened up and hurriedly said, “It’s 1976.”

Sora had already guessed this was the 1970s when she saw his bell-bottoms. Now, hearing it was 1976 confirmed it. This must be the time-travel plot where Jade used the Rabbit Talisman—the opening arc of Jackie Chan Adventures, the Talisman Saga.

“Thanks, bye,” Sora said and turned away.

“Wait, didn’t you say—”

She waved dismissively. “I don’t date men.”

The man shed tears. “How could you toy with my pure heart like this… boo hoo…”

“DJ Fist, heh.” Sora remained unfazed and turned to leave.

At this point, it was more than twenty years before the main storyline. Though the Talismans existed in this timeline, she had no idea where they were—especially the Tiger Talisman.

Her memory of the original story was fuzzy, but she recalled the Tiger Talisman appearing in a fruit pie during an eating contest. Who knew where it was before that?

So her first priority wasn’t finding the Talismans—it was getting back to the main timeline.

And that was simple enough. Just hitch a ride with Jade.

But instead of heading straight to Jade’s school, she went to San Francisco’s Chinatown.

There, she found Uncle’s antique shop and decided to wait in ambush.

At this time, Uncle wasn’t selling antiques but cassette tapes.

Sora pushed open the door to the shop and saw Uncle, still with black hair.

Currently, Uncle only knew kung fu, not magic.

“Welcome…” Uncle greeted her warmly upon seeing a customer.

‘…This girl’s outfit is so unusual!’

Was bell-bottom fashion already out? Could this be the new trend? Was she a Hollywood star? And what about that mask over her eyes? How did she see where she was going?

Uncle wondered all this and said, “Miss, what kind of cassette are you looking for?”

“This place would be perfect for selling antiques,” Sora said.

Uncle was stunned.

Was she not there to buy tapes, but to buy the shop?

Well… it wasn’t out of the question—It would just cost more.

“…Excuse me, I’ll be back later.” Sora hurriedly left.

Curious, Angewomon said, “That quickly? Where are we going now?”

She usually didn’t ask such things, just quietly watching through their shared vision. But Sora’s sudden shift caught her off guard. Uncle had just started to open up—why leave?

Sora walked into an alley and whispered, “The balance of this world’s positive and negative energies has shifted. I just sensed the presence of positive energy.”

“Positive energy?”

“Our senses are the same. You should be able to feel it too.” Sora closed her eyes and focused.

Moments later, Angewomon said, “I feel it. It’s like gravity, everywhere at once.”

Positive and negative energy had no consciousness, yet they influenced all things like the underlying code of the world.

As expected of Angewomon—she could sense all this effortlessly. Her talent for cultivation was extraordinary. It was Angewomon, after all, who first comprehended the Take Over Magic that allowed access to evolutionary forms.

Sora knew she wasn’t as gifted in magical insight and felt no envy. Each had their strengths. They were two souls in one body—one outward, one inward. A perfect balance.

“Back on topic,” Sora continued. “Our presence increased the world’s positive energy, but balance dictates that the negative energy would grow too, opening up a slot…”

Her arrival as a powerful being aligned with positive energy tipped the balance, prompting the rise of a corresponding evil force.

Meanwhile, on the other side of the globe…

In a gloomy castle stood a man.

White hair, heterochromatic eyes, narrow waist, black robes.

He was the world’s strongest dark energy sorcerer—Daolon Wong.

Suddenly, he sensed a rise in dark energy. “A vacancy has appeared…”

‘But why?’

No demons had died recently. So where did the slot come from?

‘Wait…’

This vacancy wasn’t caused by a demon dying. It came from the increase of dark energy, which itself was triggered by a powerful force of positive energy entering the world.

How paradoxical!

Usually, it was the dark side that made trouble first, prompting the positive side to react.

Why had the positive energy made the first move this time? Could this era’s champion of positive energy be a radical?

Daolon couldn’t understand it, but he knew one thing. “If I take that slot, my power will increase further! Hahaha! Daolon Wong’s era has arrived!”

Personal strength combined with the tides of the era—that’s how legends are forged. And he had the power, he just needed the opportunity.

Now, that chance had come!

But before he could celebrate… He sensed that the dark energy slot had already been taken.

‘Damn it!’

He’d hesitated for just a moment!

Was there even someone faster than him?

Daolon Wong stomped in fury. “Who?! Who stole the dark energy slot? Is there a better dark energy sorcerer than me?!”

Impossible!

Absolutely impossible!

Unless some ancient demon had awakened, there shouldn’t be a stronger dark sorcerer in this age of science.

Back in San Francisco, in a shadowy corner across from Uncle’s shop in Chinatown.

Sora, now infused with the soul of Vamdemon, stood cloaked in darkness. Just as she had sensed positive energy earlier, she now felt the presence of dark energy.

Positive and negative—opposing yet unified.

They are two sides of the same coin. Positive energy was everywhere, and so was dark energy.

Her arrival had strengthened the positive side, which opened a dark energy vacancy. Someone—some demon—would inevitably rise to fill it.

To avoid any unexpected trouble, Sora claimed that position for herself.

“I am both positive and dark. In light, I am a champion of justice. In darkness, I am a master of shadows.”

Such flexibility defined the Free type.

In the Digimon world, the most iconic Free-type Digimon was Imperialdramon—destined to become either savior or destroyer. A Free type could at any moment switch to Vaccine, Data, or Virus type.

Truly, one who could become a saint through righteousness or a demon through wickedness!
