Ch 234 : The situation isn’t right

I cleared my throat and took a moment to steady myself before asking Tingting, “Monster…?”

She pouted. “That’s not the point. The point is, how did you two end up together?”

Before I could answer, Master Gu smiled and lightly tapped her on the head.

“You silly girl, stop asking people such random questions. Today is your wedding day—can you at least act like someone about to become a wife?”

Tingting glanced back at him and pushed his face toward the big screen.

“You focus on your work, we’ll talk about ours.”

The old man in military uniform, unlike Master Gu, wasn’t relaxed at all.

His face was so tense it looked like it might crack.

His eyes darted across the screens, constantly scanning.

Whenever he spotted something suspicious, he would instruct the two technicians operating the system to zoom in on a particular feed.

To be honest, he really carried the aura of a commanding general holding the line.

Compared to him, Suo Tian and Gao, being younger, only had that kind of immediate, on-the-spot intimidation—they didn’t give off the same sense of steady reassurance.

Tingting wasn’t oblivious either.

After blinking at me twice, she stopped talking and turned her attention to the screen along with Master Gu.

I let out a quiet sigh of relief—finally, I didn’t have to answer those strange questions anymore…

But why did Tingting call Suo Tian a “monster”…?

I narrowed my eyes.

That nickname sounded oddly familiar—when we got back, I’d have to interrogate him properly!

Then again… today was her wedding.

What was the point of questioning anything now?

As time passed, people kept coming into the room to report updates to Master Gu and the old man in uniform.

The two elders’ brows furrowed tighter and tighter.

Just as the old man seemed about to slam the table again, Master Gu grabbed him.

“Old Chang, now’s not the time to lose your temper.”

The old man angrily smashed the teacup the beautiful woman had just brought him onto the ground.

“If we can’t root out this disaster today, I might as well step down! I’ve stressed again and again to minimize casualties—look at this now! How many people out there have already drunk that alcohol? Once they all collapse, it’ll be another complete mess!”

“At your age, and still such a fiery temper. Calm down,” Master Gu said, patting his shoulder.

“Xiao Tian, Xiao Gao, and the others are out there. People have already been stationed at key points, and the alcohol has been replaced. Don’t worry—those kids handle things steadily.”

Then he turned and gestured, “Tingting, go pour your Uncle Yi another glass of water.”

“Okay~” Tingting responded obediently.

Lifting her skirt, she quickly ran out, and soon returned with a cup of hot water.

She set it in front of the old man and said in a slightly teasing tone, “Uncle Yi, hurry and drink some water. If you get so angry that you fall ill, then should I be getting married today, or going to the hospital to take care of you?”

The old man clearly liked her.

His expression softened as expected.

He patted her head and took the cup. “Good child.”

After sitting back down beside me, Tingting quietly asked, “I heard you’re pregnant?”

“How did you know?” I asked, surprised.

“The assistant outside told me.”

So it must’ve been that beautiful woman—she was the only one who had overheard earlier.

“Yeah, I am.”

“Ha!” Tingting grabbed my arm excitedly. “Really? What does it feel like? Does it kick yet? Boy or girl?”

Her string of questions left me dizzy.

After thinking for a while, I forced a smile. “Look at my stomach—it’s as flat as the Himalayas. How could I feel anything? I was just sleepy a few days ago, and now I don’t feel anything at all.”

She rolled her eyes at me. “Yeah, the Himalayas are so flat.”

She glanced at my stomach again and continued, “I was planning to have a baby with Da Bai not long ago and read a lot about it. If you’re already feeling sleepy, it’s probably been at least a month, right?”

I froze for a moment, feeling like something was off, though I couldn’t quite place it.

“I don’t know… I haven’t really paid attention to that.”

Glancing at the two old men to make sure they weren’t paying attention, I lowered my voice and added, “My period is very irregular, so I can’t really calculate it.”

Tingting covered her mouth and giggled knowingly. “How long have you two been living together?”

I paused, a little embarrassed by the question, but after thinking it over, I answered, “Since we came here—over half a year now. We’ve been living together the whole time.”

“No wonder.” Tingting leaned closer to me, clearly interested.

“Da Bai and I have only been living together for a little over three months. Looks like it really is a matter of time.”

…

Seeing that I didn’t respond, Tingting cleared her throat and asked again, “Have you gone for a check-up yet?”

“Not yet.”

“When are you planning to go?”

“Suo Tian originally planned to take me this afternoon, but judging from the situation now, that probably won’t happen.”

Wait!

A check-up?

I suddenly looked up at the screens, quickly scanning through the crowd.

After sweeping over everything, my gaze locked onto Suo Tian again.

Without thinking, I immediately called out to the operator controlling the feeds, “Zoom in on camera thirteen!”

The two technicians froze for a moment when they heard me, not doing as I said.

They just looked at me oddly.

Master Gu, the old man in uniform, and even Tingting all turned to look at me.

“Chen Yang…” Tingting started to say something, but the old man waved his hand to stop her.

Then he gestured to the technicians. “Zoom in on camera thirteen.”

As the image enlarged, the entire monitored area came into clear view.

The footage was sharp—every small movement could be seen distinctly.

I stared intently at Suo Tian for a while… just as I thought.

He was watching a man in casual clothes not far away.

He was smart—he must have realized this earlier.

Standing in that corner wasn’t by chance; it was the perfect position he had chosen to observe that person.

After thinking for a moment, I turned to Master Gu. “May I ask—are there doctors from that inspection and quarantine building here today?”

Master Gu paused, then nodded. “Yes.”

“Many of them?”

“Those in plain clothes are all from the medical and testing fields—doctors and researchers,” he replied.

Being experienced, he immediately understood what I was getting at.

Then that confirmed it.

I looked back at the screen, stood up, and walked forward.

Pointing at a man in a suit who had been chatting for a long time with someone in a dark green military uniform, I turned to the old man in uniform and said, “If I’m not mistaken, he’s one of the culprits.”

Everyone in the room immediately focused their gaze on the person I indicated.

The old man’s face darkened as he looked at me. “What evidence do you have?”

“If I’m not mistaken, he should be from the seventh-floor inspection unit, right?”

Master Gu paused, then responded, “Yes, that’s correct. He’s from the seventh floor. What does that prove?”

“Then that’s enough. Although I can’t yet explain the exact reason, he definitely has a problem.”

Hearing that, the old man picked up his walkie-talkie, about to issue an order, but was stopped again by Master Gu.

“Don’t alert the enemy. Xiao Tian has already locked onto him.”

I returned to my seat.

The room fell silent again.

The screen remained fixed on camera thirteen, and everyone’s eyes kept shifting between Suo Tian in the corner of the frame and the suited man still chatting as if nothing was wrong.

After a long pause, the old man finally couldn’t hold back. “What exactly are you basing this on?”

“Tingting reminded me.”

“Me?” Tingting looked surprised.

“Just now, when Tingting mentioned the timing of pregnancy and medical checkups, it made me realize something. From the time we were trapped in the mall to when we were sent for quarantine checks, only a few days had passed after the forty-eight-hour isolation. That means I must have gotten pregnant before that. I’ve experienced the base’s medical examinations more than once—they’re extremely thorough. Something as significant as a pregnancy couldn’t possibly go undetected. If they could detect it but didn’t say anything, that alone is suspicious.”

After a brief pause, I continued, “Then I confirmed their identities with Master Gu and learned that people from that facility were indeed present. Next is what you all saw—Suo Tian’s position. At first, I thought he was just avoiding the crowd out of habit. But I know his habits well. He doesn’t talk much, but he wouldn’t deliberately stay in a corner like this. There’s only one reason he would act so deliberately—he noticed something and is observing it.”

The old man looked at me for a moment. “None of those reasons are particularly solid.”

“Whether they’re solid isn’t the point. What matters is the pattern. One oddity can be coincidence—but when multiple irregularities all point to the same person, then there’s definitely something wrong with him.”

Master Gu couldn’t help but give me an approving look. “What did you do before?”

“An elementary school teacher.”

…

Soon after, more people came in.

The old man in uniform spoke to them in a low voice, giving instructions.

Not long after, on the screen, someone else took Suo Tian’s position.

It seemed they wanted to free him up so he and Gao could search for other suspects.

The operators began to track Suo Tian on their own initiative—wherever he moved, they enlarged that camera feed.

The old man barked at them, “Don’t just focus on one person! Check where the other two teams are now!”

The two technicians froze, not daring to respond, and quickly zoomed out, starting to scan through the feeds to locate Gao and Bai Wuchang.

The middle-aged men who had been in the room earlier were now gathered in small groups, chatting and laughing.

Just from their expressions, they really looked like a few old friends reminiscing.

But with a closer look, you could still tell their eyes were alert, constantly watching their surroundings, occasionally sizing people up without drawing attention.

As the groom, Bai Wuchang seemed to have an outgoing personality.

People in various uniforms surrounded him, and the group burst into laughter from time to time.

Gao stood not far away.

He was sitting with a woman, chatting casually.

Every so often, he would smile—but in the moments when he turned his head, his gaze would sharpen as he scanned the area around him.
