Ch 250 : Beyond the city walls

Early the next morning, Suo Tian didn’t rush out.

After I finally woke up from sleeping in, he pointed at a still-warm glass of milk on the bedside table. “Drink it.”

After washing up, I downed the whole glass in one go, rinsed the cup in the bathroom, and then followed Suo Tian downstairs.

On the first floor, aside from Han Xue and Xu Shu—who were sitting together with somewhat strange expressions—the others didn’t seem to notice anything wrong.

Chen Pu especially so; it was as if being found out for what he’d done didn’t matter to him at all.

He was even squatting in front of Tingyun and Xiao Hu, playing with them.

It was obvious that both Xu Shu and Han Xue tensed up completely whenever Chen Pu got close to the two kids.

Yangyang was the first to spot Suo Tian and me coming downstairs.

He sprang up from the sofa, ran over, and took the cup from my hand.

As he did, he stared at my belly for a moment before asking curiously, “Sis… why isn’t your belly getting bigger yet? Are you too skinny—like your skin can’t stretch? Don’t smother my little nephew in there.”

I couldn’t help but laugh and smacked him lightly on the head.

“What nonsense are you talking about? You’re in high school—what did you even learn in biology class? It’s only been a little over a month. How could it show already?”

Uncle Gazi heard the noise and poked his head out of the kitchen, chuckling.

“Oh? I was wondering—Xiao Tian doesn’t usually drink milk. Why’d he go make a cup this morning? Turns out he’s just taking care of his wife.”

I scratched my head, turned to glance at Suo Tian, and let out a silly laugh.

Lili’s voice came from the kitchen as well: “Chen Yang must be over the moon.”

…

Finally, during the meal, Shen Feng was the first to notice something off about Xu Shu’s expression.

He asked thoughtfully, “Xiao Shu, are you not feeling well?”

“Huh?” Xu Shu, who had been distracted, snapped back to attention.

“What? Sorry… I spaced out just now. What did you say?”

Shen Feng patiently repeated, “Are you not feeling well?”

“No, no,” Xu Shu waved her hands quickly, sneaking a glance at Chen Pu.

“Then why do you…” Shen Feng started to ask more, but Han Xue cut him off bluntly:

“I say, Mr. Handsome Shen, do you even understand women? Who doesn’t have a few days every month? Hormones go out of whack—of course she’s not going to look the same as usual.”

Once Shen Feng understood, he froze for a moment, then immediately lowered his head and continued eating, not asking further.

Xu Shu shot Han Xue a grateful look and also lowered her head to eat.

Chen Pu ate quickly.

After putting down his chopsticks, he got up to leave, but Xu Shu called out sharply, “Xiao Pu! Where are you going?”

Chen Pu, who had already pushed his chair back, turned his head.

“Going out for a walk. Digest a bit.”

“Go back to your room.” Xu Shu’s voice was low, but filled with undeniable authority.

“No. I’ll just walk around and come back,” Chen Pu said indifferently, turning to leave.

With a loud bang, Xu Shu slammed her chopsticks onto the table, her voice dropping even heavier: “Go back to your room!”

Realizing she was truly angry, Chen Pu clicked his tongue, but still relented and turned to head upstairs.

After he went up, the entire table fell silent.

Han Xue and I knew what was going on and didn’t know what to say, while the others couldn’t understand why Xu Shu had suddenly gotten so angry over something so minor.

After a long while, Uncle Gazi spoke up to ease the tension: “Girl… what’s wrong? Did Xiao Pu do something to upset you again?”

Recently, Chen Pu had been behaving much more sensibly in front of everyone, and since he was young, no one held his previous outburst against him.

So they couldn’t understand Xu Shu’s sudden strictness.

Only after watching Chen Pu go upstairs—until the sound of his door closing came from the second floor—did Xu Shu withdraw her gaze.

She forced a smile at Uncle Gazi. “…He’s already so grown, but still doesn’t give me peace of mind. I can’t let him develop the habit of thinking he can decide everything on his own.”

“Ah,” Uncle Gazi waved his hand.

“He just wanted to take a walk to digest—nothing serious. You can’t be too strict when disciplining him.”

Xu Shu glanced toward the second floor again. “This child… has to be dealt with strictly.”

After the meal, Suo Tian and the bearded man went to an empty room on the third floor and talked for a long time.

Not long after the bearded man left, Suo Tian also came downstairs.

I was talking with Lili, asking about the reason for a patch of dull pain that had been coming and going in my lower abdomen.

Lili looked concerned after hearing it. “Could it be that getting into the water that day made you catch a chill and affected something?”

I quickly shook my head. “No, my body feels fine overall. It’s just this small spot that suddenly becomes hard and hurts.”

Lili thought carefully for a moment. “I’m not really sure what it could be. I can’t remember if I had something like that back then…”

But just after saying that, she froze, as if something suddenly came to mind. “Oh no!”

“W-what… what do you mean ‘oh no’…” I started to feel uneasy because of her reaction.

Lili looked at me seriously, then straightened up and said, “I just remembered something—I saw it online before. It said this might be… an ectopic pregnancy!”

“Nani?” Forgive me—I didn’t really have a clear idea what that meant.

Lili frowned and looked at me. “I only remember bits and pieces. It’s been too long. I just remember it sounded pretty scary, so it stuck with me. Why don’t you hurry and go to Bruno to get it checked?”

Before I could answer, Suo Tian grabbed my arm and pulled me toward the door.

“Hey—Chen Yang, put on a coat!” Taozi called out from the side.

Suo Tian paused, turned back to grab my coat from the sofa, then pulled me out again.

Although the wound on Suo Tian’s arm hadn’t fully healed, it didn’t stop him from driving.

I got into the passenger seat, put on my coat, and the car was already moving.

On the way, I unconsciously tugged at the seatbelt, my heart uneasy.

After hesitating for a while, I finally asked, “…Could it be like what Lili said?”

“No.” That’s what he said, but from how tense his face was, it was clear he wasn’t confident either.

We quickly arrived at the building.

After greeting Xiao Jie in the lobby, Suo Tian hurriedly pulled me upstairs to the third floor.

Since it wasn’t our scheduled time, Bruno looked a bit surprised to see us.

Suo Tian’s expression wasn’t good, and Bruno didn’t ask too many questions.

He led us into his office and asked about the situation in detail.

After listening to me, he frowned but didn’t answer right away.

Suo Tian’s expression immediately became even worse.

After a moment, Bruno finally said, “This situation can be serious or minor. Last time I already did an HCG test for you—there was no sign of an ectopic pregnancy. As for the rest, it’s nothing major. Just pay attention to eating lighter foods, preferably more fruit, milk, things like that. And remember—even if you don’t feel like eating sometimes, you still must eat. Don’t skip meals just because you’re not hungry.”

After hearing that, Suo Tian’s expression finally eased a little.

I said to Bruno, “Drinking milk is fine, but in our current situation, how could we possibly get fruit?”

Bruno sighed helplessly. “Then for now, just eat more meals. At the very least, get your weight up. You’re about five kilos under a normal weight now—that’s not good.”

The moment he finished speaking, Suo Tian shot me a look that made my skin crawl.

…

All in all, it was a false alarm.

After letting out a huge sigh of relief, I was pulled out of the building again by Suo Tian.

But just as we stepped outside, several cars suddenly sped in from the distance.

They were going so fast that when they braked in front of the entrance, it looked like the tires were smoking.

Once the cars stopped, quite a few people got out, including a middle-aged man.

He stepped forward, frowned, and said only one sentence to Suo Tian: “Boss, something’s happened!”

Suo Tian paused, then turned to me. “Go back with them first. Don’t wait for me tonight.”

Then he pointed at two black-clad men. “You two—take her back.”

“No, I’m not. I’m going with you.” I grabbed his arm.

For the first time, I refused his arrangement.

No matter what, I wasn’t going back alone today—not to lie in that empty room, waiting for the sound of the door downstairs opening.

“Chen Yang…” Suo Tian frowned slightly, then steeled himself and pushed me forward a bit, saying to the two men, “Make sure she gets back safely.”

“I said I’m not going!” I clung tightly to his arm, unusually firm.

After looking into my eyes for a moment, a trace of helplessness appeared in Suo Tian’s clear black-and-white gaze.

Then he waved his hand to the others. “Move out.”

And just like that, I shamelessly got back into Suo Tian’s car…

Walking along the road, watching the cars ahead, I started to feel uneasy again.

Could something really have happened?

By insisting on coming along like this, would I just be causing trouble for Suo Tian?

But after thinking it over, if it were truly a very dangerous situation, Suo Tian wouldn’t have agreed to bring me.

When the middle-aged man said something had happened, Suo Tian’s expression clearly showed he had expected it.

So… it should be fine.

The convoy stopped once again at the parking lot of the large office building in front of the city wall.

After getting out of the car, aside from the two people who stayed behind Suo Tian, the others all ran toward the stairway entrance that led up to the top of the city wall.

Following behind Suo Tian, I entered that large office again.

This time, it was far more chaotic than before.

Everyone’s faces were tense with anxiety.

As soon as Suo Tian entered, a uniformed team member immediately came forward and led us through the noisy crowd in the office to the long row of CCTV monitors.
